Update from Ms. R

This week the homework is to write a story in the homework writing journal. Each student is to write a story about the sticker in his/her journal. The story may be fiction or non-fiction. The students know to check their writing for the proper use of capitals and periods.

Dear Ms. R
As well as reviewing caps and punctuation in our child's writing, how do you feel about spelling errors?
I am hesitant to interrupt the 'flow' of writing the story.

Hello,

Thank you for your comment. You are correct in not stopping the flow of ideas. This often stops children from writing what they are thinking. The only words I insist upon being spelled correctly are word wall words and words that are easily checked (that is if the word is in the question or instructions). I have taught the children to stretch out the word, even say it aloud slowly to hear all the sounds in the word and then match letters to those sounds. So having said that the word "because" should be spelled correctly because it is a word wall word. The word "fantastic" could be spelled "fantastk" for example because it shows the child has heard and letter-matched the sounds in the word.
I hope this helps.
